One of the biggest “landscaping traditions” we hear about is spring planting. And it makes sense: the weather is warming up, everything’s coming alive again, and it just feels good to get outside after a long winter. Spring showers and warming soil create great conditions for new plants to take root.
But here’s a little insider tip from the pros at Charter Vista Landscaping:
The absolute best time to plant isn’t spring—it’s fall.
1. Less Stress on Your Plants
As temperatures drop, plants lose less water through evapotranspiration (basically, the plant version of sweating). That means they won’t dry out as quickly, and you’ll spend less time watering and worrying about wilting leaves.
2. Warm Soil = Strong Roots
Even though the air is cooling down, our Mid-South soil stays warm well into late fall—often through November or even December. That warm soil is a root-growing paradise. Plants can focus on developing strong root systems without the stress of summer heat.
3. A Head Start Before Summer
When you plant in fall, your landscape has three full seasons—fall, winter, and spring—to get established before the next summer rolls in. That means healthier plants, less maintenance, and a stronger, more resilient landscape.
