What Are USDA Hardiness Zones?
The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Hardiness Zones are a standardized way of mapping which plants are most likely to thrive in different parts of the country. These zones are determined by the average minimum winter temperatures in a region. For example, Memphis falls within Zone 7b, which means winter temperatures typically drop as low as 5°F to 10°F.
Each plant is assigned a range of zones where it can not just survive—but flourish. Take Encore Azaleas, for instance: they are rated for Zones 6a through 10b, making them versatile, resilient choices for our area.
Why Zones Matter in Landscape Design
As landscape professionals, these zones are our starting point. When we evaluate a plant, we’re not just asking, “Will it survive here?” We’re asking, “Will it thrive here?”
Here’s how zones influence our decisions:
- Outdoor Perennials must be hardy to Zone 7b or lower.
- Annuals are often chosen based on seasonal interest, not zone hardiness, because they complete their lifecycle in one season.
- Indoor/Patio Plants might not be zone-hardy at all—but still offer beauty and function when used strategically.
That said, real-world conditions don’t always match the zone map. Soil compaction, inconsistent watering, droughts, or unexpected freezes can still challenge even the hardiest plants. That’s why we often build in a safety buffer.
The One-Zone Buffer Rule
We typically look for plants that are rated at least one zone lower and higher than our area. Why? Because nature doesn’t always play by the rules. A Zone 8-10 plant might suffer or die during a surprise Memphis cold snap. On the other hand, a Zone 5-8 plant might wilt under our intense summer heat.
Choosing plants rated from Zone 6a to 10b—like Encore Azaleas—gives us more resilience on both sides of the spectrum.
